Private Half Day Jewish Tour - Walking Tour

On this walking tour I invite you to come and join me on a trip through time and go back to the 15th century. 20% of Portuguese have Anusim names ( אֲנוּסִים refers to Jewish who were forced to abandon Judaism against their will) meaning that Lisbon has a big hidden Jewish legacy. Let's walk along ALFAMA and Baixa districts in order to better understand the Jewish heritage in the city. We'll cover the area where Jewish stores were, the former Jewries, Synagogue and cemetery.
Not only we are going into this hard period of our history but also remember the dramatic time of the II WW. Along the downtown I'll show you Coffee-shops, Hotels and Restaurants where Jewish refugees used to spend their days waiting for a Visa or a boat ticket to escape Nazi Europe using neutral Portugal as a bridge from the Old to the New Continent.
A visit to the 1902 Synagogue can be arranged. This visit depends on voluntaries so a request needs to be done in advance (AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE MORNING FROM MONDAY TO THURSDAYS)

Itinerary

We'll start from the Hard Rock Caffe located in the city center and walk for the next 4 hours. Several stops are to be done and definitely a coffee and washroom break so that we can refresh ourselves.
We'll start by Rossio where the former Inquisitional Palace used to be, then the central Train Station where refugees arrived by hundreds in 1940 and then down the downtown (called Baixa) until the Praça do Comércio.
Continue along the waterfront until Alfama to see the unique vestige of a former Jewish District in Lisbon.
All tour is on cobblestoned streets but flat and easy to walk.
In case a visit to the synagogue has been confirmed (depends on their availability) we'll catch a taxi there and hear more about the local community).

* Make sure you use confortable shoes and bring a hat and water during the summer season.

**Taxi costs around 7€ (up to 4 passengers).

A Recent Review of this tour

Mathilde did a great job of guiding us during this walking tour. WARNING: to those who are looking to have a Jewish Heritage experience just know that there is very little evidence in Lisbon of a Jewish community. Visits to the 1902 synagogue must be arranged in advance and there are no visitations on Friday (the day we were in Lisbon). Lisbon has a tremendous historical significance for Jews leaving Europe during WWII but the remaining vestiges are few.
