I am a local shop owner, I've worked on many cultural/social projects in the city center and have an extensive network.
Together with my husband Ian - who is also on the ToursByLocals platform - I have had the pleasure to show visitors around in our beautiful hometown!
What people like about my tours are my enthusiasm, my (local) knowledge and the different perspectives and unexpected stories and places we visit.
I love to go off the beaten path, no tour is the same. I like to introduce you to local people, food, and current events in town.
I do many tours in combination with my husband, who is more the 'history-expert', I am more the cultural and current-events guide. A lot of times people book one tour with me and one with him, to get both perspectives.
LOCAL SHOP OWNER
I've studied Social & Cultural Work (BA) and have worked with different non-profits and in tourism in Amsterdam. My husband and me are the only guides in Amsterdam who own a (chocolate!) shop in the old city center/Red Light District. Here I am involved in a big project that is reshaping the neighborhood and in some social & cultural projects.
What I do in my spare time: I love to visit historic villages and small museums, but also the big museums in Amsterdam like the van Gogh Museum and Amsterdam Museum.
Travelling with my family is one of my passions, to visit other countries, discover other cultures (food!), museums, hiking in nature, and meeting other people. This is why I also love to make guests of Amsterdam enthusiastic of my hometown!
I was born-and-raised in the countryside of the Netherlands (Friesland), and since 10+ years a happy citizen of Amsterdam.
My ancestors are connected to the Dutch 'spice trade', the trade that made Amsterdam the richest town in the world in the 17th century.
I am a world citizen with an international and multicultural family. My family has lived in all different places, from South-Korea, to Texas, to Indonesia, Brazil, Israel, New York and Canada.
Since January 2018 I've started my own tours and page on the ToursByLocals platform. The past few years I've helped my husband Ian, also a ToursByLocals guide, to organize a lot of tours. You can read one of the reviews of a tour we did together here:
"Ian and Salomé were perfect hosts for a wonderful day in Haarlem and Amsterdam. Salomé met us promptly at our hotel, accompanied us by train to Haarlem for the first half of our tour. She'd reserved tickets at Corrie Ten Boom house in Haarlem, a highlight of our trip.
We met up later with Ian for walking tour of old city Amsterdam including red light district. Both provided hugely helpful local and historical perspectives.
There were so many unexpected perks along the way in a truly delightful day!"
I hope to meet you soon and create an unforgettable stay in Amsterdam for you!
A Recent Review of this guide
This tour was outstanding. Not only did we learn about chocolate & spice, Salome gave us some of the history of the red light district. There was only 5 of us on the tour. Salome and her sister spent over an hour in her shop talking about chocolate and the different countries it came from. Our group was very happy with this tour and all the different samples we tried. I would recommend this tour to everyone and tell them it was great.
