Discover remains of whale hunting, reclaimed land, and modern agriculture

The area north of Amsterdam gives the feeling of a forgotten rural area. In the 17th century this was a prosperous area with rich cities. Enjoy the flat countryside, where dykes are the only hills and where most of the land is below sea level.

Reclaiming land started here. De Beemster lake was the first lake to reclaim. In between 1609 and 1612 the lake of De Beemster changed into a beautiful landscape that lies 3. 5 meters below sea level. De Beemster was put on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in 1999.

De Rijp is a historical village at the side of De Beemster. Before the Beemster lake was pumped dry, De Rijp was known for its fishing industry, both for herring and for whales and experienced enormous growth. The town is famous for its characteristic Dutch renaissance style buildings.

The draining of the Beemster and other lakes in the area was bad news for De Rijp, but good for agriculture. The blue clay underneath was fertile. It gave farmers high yields. The cheese making industry came up.

Itinerary

We will drive to the flat countryside north of Amsterdam. We will stop at a windmill museum, where the miller will explain what he is doing. We will take some smaller roads around De Beemster polder and stop the car at the Rijp to make a small walking tour here.

De Rijp is a beautiful small old town with a glorious past. Somewhere on the way we will stop for lunch. In the afternoon we could visit a cheese farm and / or make a boat tour in the wetlands around De Rijp.

The program is flexible and I can always adjust it to your wishes.
Good weather is not included. Be prepared for rain, wind and cold weather. In the months of March and April, even gloves are sometimes needed.
