A masterpiece of urban planning and architecture in the 17th century
Amsterdam had its hey-day between 1600 and 1700. It owed its wealth in this period above all to its well-organised staple market and its shipping industry. Products from around the world were brought to Amsterdam, packed in the city's many warehouses, bought and sold on the exchange and eventually sent elsewhere.
The dominant maritime trade power due to the shipbuilding industry and its liberal attitude made Amsterdam rich and it gave work to a fast growing amount of citizens. Its population grew from 30, 000 in 1600 to almost 200, 000 in 1700. The city was bursting at the seams and had to expand. In 1613 the city council came up with an extensive and demanding plan to make 3 circular canals around the old city. Rich merchant families who had enough money to afford a plot of land along one of the canal rings finally had the chance to build a house that fitted their new wealth.
Let's enjoy this beautiful canal zone. Come with me on a tour by private boat. I will show you around this unique area.
We will make a tour through the canals of Amsterdam. I live on a houseboat in Amsterdam and know the best places. We will see some of the most outstanding canal houses and hear interesting stories. The route can be changed according to your preferences. If you want we can start or finish at my own houseboat just outside of the old city centre (15 minutes walking distance from Anne Frank House)
Good weather is not included. Be prepared for rain, wind and cold weather. In the months of March and April, even gloves are sometimes needed.
