Explore a medieval fortress in the Odessa region and vineyards
The medieval fortress is situated about 50 miles from the downtown of Odessa. The fortress is about 500 years old.
There is an interesting winery in an adjacent town which was founded by Swiss settlers in the middle of the 19th century. The winery has the best modern equipment and a museum dedicated to the settlers and is worth visiting. There is a store where good wine can be bought directly from the winery.
The tour starts in Odessa, in the location you specify. Then we drive to Belgorod-Dnestrovskiy by way of Palanka, through picturesque countryside crossing the Dniester in the north, directly to the fortress. The ride takes about 90 minutes. The fortress takes about one hour to do. After visiting the fortress we might see some ancient Sarmat and Skif tombs and go to Shabo where you have the option of visiting the winery museum dedicated to Swiss colonists who settled here in the 19th century. A guided tour in the museum takes up to 3 hours but it is worth it. There is also a restaurant there that you can visit. Finally, we drive back to Odessa by way of Zatoka, this time crossing the mouth of the Dniester river with the Black Sea on the right and the liman (estuary) on the left. The drive also takes about 90 minutes.

Duration: 6 hours
This includes driving from Odessa and back which can take between 2 and 4 hours. The actual tour of the fortress can take about one hour. If the winery must be visited along this also makes it longer. It is hard to predict how long this will all take total.
My 1968 Volga classic car (not air-conditioned). It can take up to 4 passengers and is big enough (16 by 6 feet).
If it is important for you to have a modern, bigger or an air-conditioned vehicle it is possible to arrange it (a third-party taxi) but this will require a separate tour and its price will be different. Message me for details.

Igor took us to the village of Novosvetlovka, where my great grandfather had immigrated to, from Germany in 1805 (then called Rohrbach). It was about 65 miles of very rough roads (under re-construction) and he did a wonderful job of navigating through this very difficult terrain. The old Volga was the perfect vehicle for this --built like a Russian tank!. Igor showed up right on time, outside of our Viking River boat, and was a great driver and guide. i would do this difficult trip again with him!
