Acoma Pueblo Private Tour with a Photographers Eye
Considered to be one of longest inhabited places in North America. The village itself lies atop a sheer sided mesa several hundred feet above the valley floor.
Please inquire about time and date as Acoma open dates are subject to change especially November to February.
Years ago we drove to the Pueblo but today we pick up a tour guide and ride five minutes to the top. Acoma guides discuss the early history, the Spanish occupation and the history of the church which is still active today. Learn about their matriarchal society and conflicts with the four governments they have dealt with. Potters may have some ware displayed for sale. I do not accompany you while you are with the local Acoma guide. I can answer questions you may have.
The old Pueblo is closed for ceremonial use several days a year so we need a few minutes to check with the visitor center.
Allow 6-8 hours from Albuquerque. Walking on dirt paths. Great gift shop visitor center and restaurant.
We have a 2 hour drive to Acoma. As we climb out of the Albuquerque valley we will discuss some geology, historical and cultural aspects of the region. The cultural diversity is as varied as the landforms we pass through. Any time you want a photo stop please dont hesitate to ask. We will make a photo stop at Laguna Pueblo along the way. There will be a short stop at an overlook of the Acoma Valley See the telephoto shot on the opening page. At Acoma we will see an interpretive video before making the short ride up to the village. We meet a local guide from the the tribe who will lead a walking tour of about one mile. There will be frequent stops. You will have a choice at the end of the tour to descend an ancient stairway. If you chose to do so I will carry your packs and any purchases.
