An Eclectic Mix of Aalborg's Charm with a private guide
This 'bus' tour introduces Aalborg's main points of interest both ancient and modern. Starting in the city centre we go back to the Iron Age at Lindholm Høje. From here, driving through the beautiful suburbs, we call at an 'allotment garden' to be met by a genuine Danish host.
Continuing; via a drive through a forest, a panoramic view of the limfjord and surroundings, we see modern Scandinavian design at its best; culminating at a 'different' church design. Driving into the city centre, we go back to the Middle Ages, see some wonderful buildings and hear some fascinating tales of years gone by.
Onto the harbour front, once buzzing with commerce and industry, now a peaceful, relaxed centre for the arts and education. It's where Aalborg's young and old congregate on a warm summer's day to meet, picnic, swim, relax or enjoy a concert.
Here also proudly sits The Utzon Centre, the last design of Aalborg's famous son, architect Jørn Utzon (of Sydney Opera House fame) and our new and ultra modern Opera House.
Driving east, we pass Karolinelund, built in the 1800s for officers and their wives to 'parade'. Today it's a culture park and urban garden spot. Via the tunnel we go under the fjord to Lindholm Høje, the largest Viking burial ground so far discovered.
Returning by bridge over the fjord, we drive west along the fjord passing marinas, the racecourse and onto a peculiarly Danish speciality, an allotment garden. Here we meet the owners and spend a little time chatting and looking round their special place.
Moving on, past Alvar Aalto's Art Gallery, we enter Mølle Park, a forest on the edge of the city centre. Passing Aalborg's 'White House', we stop at the sculpture of Noah's Ark and take in wonderful views of the fjord, before coming to the very unique - Gug Church.
Onto the city centre, we park our transport and take a short walking tour of the charming old town and hear about its past. Our tour ends on the recently refurbished harbour front, the Utzon Centre and Opera House.
