Meiko became a good friend over our three days of touring. She brought the temples, shrines and their stories to life for us with enthusiasm. We enjoyed learning about her family history and how it was interwoven with the recent history of Japan. Meiko was extremely knowledgeable and imparted her appreciation of Japan generously. She was most encouraging when I told her I wanted to learn some simple Japanese phrases, providing mnemonic devices for me to remember words and numbers.
