Tijuca Forest is a mountainous hand-planted rainforest in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Tijuca National Park is the world's largest urban forest, covering 32 km². Tijuca Forest is home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife, many threatened by extinction, found only in the Atlantic Rainforest. After all the original forest had been destroyed to make way for coffee farms, Tijuca was replanted in the second half of the 19th century, in order to protect Rio's water supply.
Visiting Tijuca Forest, the green spine of Rio, you will admire the city, stopping at 3 belvederes:
1) the light pagoda-style gazebo at Vista Chinesa outlook;
2) the giant granite picnic table called Mesa do Imperador;
3) the Canoas Belvedere, with a sweeping panorama of the São Conrado district.
You will see Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Gávea and Dois Irmãos Mountains and Pedra Bonita (the taking off place for the Hang Gliding) and the islands of Pepino Beach.
