This tour lasts up to 7 hours. It combines the visit of the Valley of Temples, the Archaelogical Museum (or the Kolymbetra Garden) with that of Agrigento's old town.
The city today occupies the site of the ancient Greek Akropolis. But apart from the entrance of some hypugeums and the remains of a Doric temple incorporated in S. Maria dei Greci church, the plan of the town is Arabic and Norman.
The most remarkable monument is represented by the medieval church complex of Santo Spirito ( XIII ); San Gerlando Cathedral (XII); San Lorenzo church (XVIII) and the rich Gallery in the Collegio dei Filippini.
Most of these monuments are to be find along via Atenea, heart and meeting point of the city. Barock and Neoclassical façades are overlooking the medieval street that is today the best place for shopping in town or to taste the legendary Sicilian ice creams and almond pastry. Don't lose the chance to taste even the sweet couscous prepared according a centuries old recipe by the nuns of Santo Spirito cloister. |
