Santa Marta is a "favela" located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. It was the first community to have installed the Unities of Pacifying Policy (UPPs) in the city. Since 2008, a cable car serves the 7 thousand residents up and down Dona Marta Hill. This favela has been visited by celebrities like Madonna, Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Michael Jackson. One of the touristic attractions is the "lage" (deck) where Michael Jackson's video clip "They Don't Care About Us" was shot.
On this tour we will be guided by a local resident through the narrow alleys of the community and learn the way of life in such poor areas that characterize the unequality of Rio's society. We will discover the samba rhythm in a percussion workshop with one of the music social projects active in the community. We will also learn the art of flying kites over the "lages", a typical amusement of local kids, and enjoy a beautiful view of Guanabara Bay. |
