Hike the magnificent San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado while learning about the local geology, alpine ecology and mining history. From your base in the historic mining town of Ouray (the "Switzerland of America") we will explore forests, meadows of wildflowers, hot springs, alpine tundra, extinct volcanoes and mineralized areas. Visits to Telluride or Silverton for hiking are also possible depending upon your schedule.

*Discover, via walking, the history of the Red Mountain Mining District, once a booming silver and gold mining area.

| I will meet you in Ouray at your hotel or other designated site. Having prearranged our hikes prior to the start date, we will set off for our first destination of the day. Let's say that Bridge of Heaven is our first choice for hikes. Hiking the trail to Bridge of Heaven will elicit discussions as to the geology and natural history of the area. After about a 4 hour hike you will have reached the breathtaking view of the northern San Juan Mountain skyline. Another destination might be to climb/hike Mount Sneffels (a 14150' peak). This requires an early start to beat any summer afternoon rains. Yet another would be to take a walking tour of the Red Mountain Mining District to see old mine workings, ghost towns, and rail systems of the 1880s. Top that off with a tour of the Ouray County Historical Museum. These are just a few of the MANY itineraries we could create for you. |

| Meet up location: We will meet in a prearranged location and time in Ouray, CO. Another option is to meet in Montrose, CO and drive to your chosen hiking/sightseeing destination. Montrose is a larger town and I drive through it to get to Ouray. |
