The city of Brussels was founded in the 13th century, but remnants of its medieval past can be hard to find. The medieval city was gradually covered over and hidden away as Brussels grew and changed over the centuries.
But if you look closely, you can still find pieces of the medieval past tucked away in forgotten corners of the city. This walking tour will bring the Brussels of the Middle Ages to life--from the ducal palaces and Gothic churches to the old city walls and original streets.
Along the way, learn about the feudal history of Brussels. Long before Belgium was ever a country, Brussels was an important mercantile, political and cultural center, contested by kings and dukes over the centuries.
The tour will start in the magnificent Grand'Place, with its stunning 15th-century Hotel de Ville (town hall). From there we'll visit the Cathedral of St-Michel and St-Gudule, and see the remains of the original Romanesque church underneath. We'll see vestiges of the original 13th-century city wall and visit the sole remaining tower of the second wall, built at the end of the 14th century. Finally, we'll tour the archeological site of the medieval Coudenburg Palace, buried under the Place Royal in the 18th century.
