Karnak is a difficult site to understand. JeanFrancois Champollion, the Frenchman who first deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs, described it as "so vast and so grandiose" that the Egyptians must have designed it for "men one hundred feet tall. "
Not only is Karnak huge—the complex covers over two square kilometers (1. 6 square miles)—but it is the result of almost constant building activity that began over 4700 years ago and continues even today.
The Temple of Amen-Ra, Karnak's principal building, is the largest religious structure ever built. It was the god's home on earth, and around it lay the homes of his relatives—his wife, Mut, and their son, Khonsu. Their temples, too, are enormous.
Successive kings renewed, repaired, and enlarged these residences much as generations of a family might remodel their ancestral home to changing needs and tastes.
In ancient times, religious processions moved between the Karnak Temple complex and Luxor Temple along a 2. 5 kilometer-long paved Avenue of Sphinxes. |

After picking you up from your hotel, we start your day tour on the east bank of Luxor where you will be accompanied by myself, your private english Egyptologist guide to visit the Karnak Temples. These are the greatest example of worship in history and were dedicated to the God Amon, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. It was constructed from the beginning of the Middle Kingdom to the Graeco Roman Kingdom.
We then move on to Luxor Temple. It was built by Amunhotep III in 18th Dynasty in the New Kingdom and it was completed by Ramesses II during the 19th Dynasty. King Ramses II was the most famous king in the 19th Dynasty. He ruled Egypt for about 67 years. It was dedicated to the great god Amun-Ra, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu together representing the Theban triad. A visit to the Obelisk of Ramses II in front of the 1st Pylon concludes our tour. |
