Kankwari Fort in Alwar is one of the major attractions for visitors to the world famous Sariska National Park. The ancient Kankwari Fort lies in the buffer area of the sanctuary about 21 km from its main entry point. Though the fort is lesser known, it holds special significance in the history of medieval India. Kankwari Fort in Alwar is flanked with hillocks covered with lush plantations and sprawling green meadows that add to the beauty of the otherwise ruined fort.
The Kankwari Fort dates back to the days of Mughal rule in India. It is believed that Dara Shikoh, the brother of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, served his lifelong exile at the Kankwari Fort. |
