Hiking in the Knysna Forest |
one day cultural and nature tour |
The Knysna forests are the largest rainforests of South Africa. They stretch along the Garden Route between the Indian ocean and the Outeniqua mountains several kilometres inland. In these forests, the balance between nature and man for survival has been played out for centuries. Here, Knysna's history unfolds with tales of hardy woodcutters, Italian silk growers, unscrupulous timber merchants, royal ivory hunters, gold-diggers, adventurers, botanists, writers, lost children and foundlings. The walking trails follow ancient elephant tracks and traces of these magnificent creatures which still roam the forests may sometimes be found along the way. Local writers, Dalene Matthee and Hjalmar Thesen have brought to life the historical drama played out in this area in their novels. A tour not to be missed. |

9. 00 Pick up at the hotel in Knysna. It takes about half an hour to get to the rainforest. Stop at the Diepwalle forest station. Our hike begins here. Depending on your level of fitness, there are three trails from this point of varying distances: 1. Black elephant trail(9kms)which isn't a difficult walk (2hrs 30mins) 2. White elephant trail(8kms)which takes about two hours and has no steep slopes. 3. red elephant trail (7kms), although shorter than the others the terrain makes it more difficult but it's particularly beautiful. (2hrs 30mins) A visit to the Diepwalle forest station and then a light picnic lunch in the forest. A visit to The Gouna forest station and museum church which is connected to the history of the Italian immigrants who settled here in the 1800's, hoping to farm silkworms.
