The Renaissance workshop concentrates on fresco painting technique, combining a creative learning experience while taking advantage of the rich artistic heritage and stunning landscape that the Veneto Region has to offer. With its multitudes of fresco adorned historical buildings, it is the perfect place in which to learn and to draw inspiration from.
The workshop offers full-day activities in an intensive course devoted to the techniques, materials, history and the theory of fresco painting and an introduction to conservation. Activities include a series of lectures followed by a demonstration and hands-on practical session. You'll have the opportunity to learn the authentic Renaissance 'Buon Fresco' technique - from the traditional preparatory drawings, mortar mixing and application, and the use of pigments to painting on a wet wall and/or a portable support, which you may keep at the end of the course. |

With over 20 years' experience in traditional painting techniques and art work restoration, Ortolan Studio's mission is to preserve and further these ancient crafts through the sharing of knowledge, while at the same time promoting the use of eco-friendly solutions in this field.
The use of all-natural raw materials like pigments originating from earth, colorants and binders made of organic elements in a step by step process.

Ortolan Studio is situated in the historical centre of Serravalle (today known as Vittorio Veneto) at the foot of the Dolomites, just 30 miles north of Venice. The name Serravalle literally means, "Close the valley".
It is a medieval town built around a castle belonging to the Da Camino family, as first recorded in 1175. As part of the Republic of Venice, Serravalle grew to be a wealthy and famous capital in this large and rich territory through trade with Germany and Venice in the late middle Ages. In the Renaissance period many well-known families built palaces here.
Ortolan Studio is housed in one of the most important palazzos of the Renaissance time. With its private terraced garden and fresco covered façade and interiors, the four-storey palazzo provides the perfect environment, integrating instruction with (the chance to reside in) an artistic cultural setting. |
