Take a guided hike up Mt. Esja, the beloved city mountain of Reykjavik, Iceland. We take it nice and easy on our way up the mountain and enjoy the climbing with good stops in between for information and stories from the guide.
To reach the top of Mt. Esja we have to climb some cliffs with simple hand support but if you are afraid of heights you can wait just beneath the cliffs. At the top we enjoy the view, write our names in the mountain guest book before we head down again.
Mt. Esja is only half an hour's drive from the city centre and suitable for beginners in hiking but you have to be in normal heath. Age: 8-65 years. Suitable for individuals, families and groups of all sizes.
Personal guidance in English and Swedish and even some Finnish. |

| We usually leave at 9:30am, but the time of departure can be negotiable. We drive for 20-30 minutes to the trailhead and start walking. We take it nice and easy on the way up the mountain with many breaks to listen to information and stories from the guide. On top of the mountain we sign in the visitors' book and take a nice break for refreshments and stories. After 15-30 minutes' break we head down again. On the way back to the car we take a peak into a forest close to the parking lot. |

My guide knew exactly what to do. We stopped a few times as she told us about the landscape below, and the plants and trees in the area. She regaled us with stories of the early settlers in the area, of the hidden people, and many other tidbits that made the hike amusing. Reykjavik Grapevine Issue No 7, 2009 |
Thank you very much for a wonderful Esja tour of mountain climbing on 30 Aug. 2009! Regards and all the best for you. Siegrid Heinzelmann and son Gerhard Heinzelmann from Wangen/Allgäu in Germany |
