One of Cairo's most popular tourist attractions is the Citadel which houses a number of museums, ancient mosques and other sites. The Citadel is one of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare. Salah ad-Din (Saladin to Westerners 1171-1193 AD) fortified the area to protect it against attacks by the Crusaders, and since then, it has never been without a military garrison. Originally it served as both a fortress and a royal city. Its jewel is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha(19th century).
Old Cairo is so named because it is the oldest part in Cairo. There, one can visit the Hanging Church (The Church of the Virgin Mary), built into the walls of the Water Gate of the Roman fortress. It is possibly the oldest Christian church in Egypt, dating to around the 4th Century. Church of St. Sergius (Abu Serga), which the Coptic church tradition confirms, is built atop one of the sites where the Holy Family rested on their flight from Herod. |
