As a Biologist, this is the tour I like the most!! I used to attend the gardens as a student of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, later as a Biology teacher and throughout my life as a resident of the Botanical Garden neighborhood. So, besides knowing the park by heart, I have an affectionate relation to this area. In this visit we are going to experience not only the lushness of the Atlantic rainforest, but also learn about plants adaptations and Brazillian history. The Botanical Garden displays a collection of over 8, 000 species of plants (native and exotic) and around 150 species of birds and mammals, like the Channel-billed Toucan and Howler monkeys. The animals are in their natural habitat but have become accustomed to humans and are fairly easy to observe in the park. We also find here the first gunpowder factory founded by D. John VI, prince regent of Portugal, when the royal family moved to Brazil in 1808. Let me share my passion for this park with you! |
