Many people call the suburb of Kreuzberg the 'alternative Berlin', and it certainly has a history all of it's own! In the late 1800's it was a hub of industrial development and workers slums outside Berlin's city center. Like much of Berlin it was devastated by the bombing during WWII. After the division of the city it was uniquely placed, belonging to the west but being surrounded on three sides by the Berlin Wall. It became a center not only for the Turkish immigrant worker culture, but also a bastion of the radical left and artistic culture throughout the cold war years. These days it is one of the most diverse and colorful neighborhoods of Berlin, incorporating everything from the still strong Turkish culture (Berlin in the largest turkish city outside of Turkey itself), to the still radical left (squats and May Day riots), modern urban planning and architecture, as well as some of Europe's best street art, graffiti and modern cafe culture, not to mention some of the best fresh food markets in Berlin. |

| We start either at your hotel or at the Schönleinstrasse U-bahn station, whatever is more convenient for you. We begin by wandering some of the backstreets of Kreuzberg, taking in some of the old workers slums which are now trendy apartment buildings and seeing some of the innovative architecture which replaced the bombed out buildings from the second World War. We'll see some extraordinary street art (both official and non) while taking in sites completely off the beaten track and discovering Berlin's Turkish culture, it's most infamous squatted buildings, and discussing how they manage to live alongside each other in this modern city. See the infamous 'Tree House at the Wall', and hear the story of how a Turkish man used a loophole in the Wall construction to create a dwelling from scraps and grow his own vegetable garden which still exists today. We'll finish at the East Side Gallery, an extraordinary art project on the longest piece of the Berlin wall still remaining. |
|
| Meet up location: Either at your hotel, or already in Kreuzberg, usually at the Schönleinstrasse U-bahn station, it's up to you. |

| If you book a tour with me in a car, I am not the driver. It is much safer to have a separate driver and guide(not to mention that I am used to driving on the left!). Just ask me for rates... |
