Hidden Hudson Valley: Exploring Woodstock Like a Local

Peace, Love, Music

Since the rock festival of 1969, Woodstock has been renowned as an icon of counter culture. But its history as a flourishing art colony dates back to the beginning of the century.

So get off The Green. Get away from the shops crowded with other tourists. Instead, enjoy the magical byways and hide-a-ways that only a local would know. (We've had our place here in Woodstock for 33 years.) And as you enjoy, hear some of the "local news and analysis" that makes Woodstock, well, Woodstock!

  Itinerary:
Meeting on The Village Green (where else?), we'll stroll up Rock City Road (and find out why it's called Rock City) to the Artists Cemetery and crypt of Ralph Whitehead, the man some call Woodstock's first hippie. Then on to Byrdcliffe Art Colony, founded in 1902. Continuing to climb Meads Mt., we then visit the Church on the Mount, a Woodstock icon, and right next to it, at the base of iconic Overlook Mt., the exquisite Buddhist temple, western hemisphere home of Tibetan Buddhism. If we are fortunate, we may be able to observe the saffron-robed monks and others in prayer, visit the unique bookstore, and sip a cup of tea on the veranda overlooking the hills.

Descending back down the mountain to Woodstock, we'll see the Bearsville Theatre, site of the historic Bearsville Recording Studios. (You know, Dylan, Joplin.) We'll stop to take a peek at the goodies (and maybe sample a few) on display at a popular local market before arriving back at The Green.
