Legend has it that the tree is so big because a chief was buried under it. It is said to have shaded 1000 people, and that 22 22-ox wagons could park under it.
Today, it is much smaller, but recovering. More than 1000 years old, it has watched the ebb and tide of history flow around it. Devastated by a fire in the 1870's, and disese that resulted in a 20 year quarantine, it is now a fraction of it's original size. It stands watch over a 200ha nature reserve, home to a number of small game species, stone age and iron age sites and the ruins of a fort, built by President Kruger to protect Pretoria from possible invasion by the British.
Situated just North of Pretoria, in the Magaliesberg mountains, this venue offers 'bush in the city'. The hiking trail around the reserve and past all the sites lasts 4 hours, with shorter options available. A shady picnic site beckons at the end of the walk.
The route to or from the site goes through Pretoria, and we visit all the places of interest in the city. |

We would travel directly to the Wonderboom Nature reserve and enjoy the walk. This is best done as early as possible (gates open 07h00) in order to avoid the heat of the day, especially in summer.
After the walk, we have a picnic in the reserve. From there, we travel into the city, seeing Church Square and the historic buildings there, Kruger House Museum, City Hall and the Museum of Natural History, the Union Buildings and Melrose House.
The amount of time spent at each location depends on individual interest and time available. |
