There are many ancient water towns, such as Zhujiajiao, Fengjing under the jurisdiction of Shanghai (provincial level as Beijing), Zhouzhuang, Luzhi and Tongli under Jiangsu province, Wuzhen, Xitang and Nanxun under Zhejiang province, featuring the traditional layout of the lower reaches to Yangtze River, are renowned for their classic elegance and peacefulness.
--Shanghai-- Zhujiajiao, the best preserved one in Shanghai. Fengjing, the cradle of Jianshan farmer painting. --Jiangsu-- Zhouzhuang, is called the No. 1 Jiangnan water town, but crowded during holidays. Mi Mi suggests to visit Suzhou, Luzhi or Tongli in the daytime, then stay in Zhouzhuang overnight. --Zhejiang-- Xitang, is promoted for the night cruise and traditional opera show, however, many tourists prefer to sit in the courtyard to feel the time flow during afternoon. Wuzhen, is marketed as the last Jiangnan water town with rich culture deposits, but it's still being rebuilt.

A 1-day Zhujiajiao Tour: Take about 45 minutes by bus from the downtown of the city to the suburb. We'll see rows of the newly built houses owned by the local affluentials and some immigrations alongside the highway.
Walk through the ancient street to feel the tranquilness, see the attractions, and learn the ways to make traditional food and handicrafts. Take a wooden boat to cruise the river among the old houses, then visit a manorial garden formerly owned by a retired official in the Qing Dynasty. Savor the local red-cooked pork and river fish. Have a cup of tea in a well-known traditional tea house which allows a panoramic view of the town.
If you prefer a private car for a round trip you'd pay over USD100 in addition, or USD60 for the taxi.
1-2 days' tours of other ancient water towns are also optional, please consult Mi Mi if you are interested. |
