Sandy was tour guiding for 5 years before he found ToursByLocals. It fits ideally into his skill set, ideals, and outgoing playful personality. His enthusiasm for Vancouver Island comes from the fact that although he has lived here since 1981, he still feels like a tourist. Although he was raised in the crowded heartland of Southern Ontario, Canada, he feels blessed to call Vancouver Island his home.
Here's some more about him. If Sandy hears a bird, he can tell you what it is is. He knows the majority of the plants growing on Vancouver Island, even in Latin! Having worked as a professional forester for many years he can tell you tons of stuff about the forest industry; why it does this and not that; and how it has changed through his career. And from working in forestry, he also learned about all sorts of other resources that interact with the industry such as, geology, fish & fish habitat, terrain stability, deer, elk and bear habits, abouriginal culture and so on.
Sandy is also a leader in local efforts to build a better tourism industry in the area. He is on the board of Alberni Valley Tourism and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He also writes a monthly column in the local newspaper, calling himself the Permanent Visitor.
