Imagine the silence of the bush as you walk up the bushed walls of a beautifully preserved meteor impact crater about 225000 years old. Gaze across a spring-fed lake to the other wall about 1km away and imagine the energy needed to blast this hole in the earth.
Observe the folding of the rock on the way out up the old salt mining road. Spend some time in the interpretation centre, and enjoy a picnic under the trees at the picnic site.
Pretoria, the administrative capital, is a bustling modern city, liberally sprinkled with historical buildings such as Paul Kruger's house, the Raadsaal, Melrose House, City Hall, the Transvaal Museum and the Union Buildings, a magnificent example of the work of Sir Herbert Baker. These buildings are now the Presidency. The history of the city area predates European settlement and makes for interesting discussion.
We wend our way through some of the suburbs, from high density flatlands to spread-out homes, older buildings to the most modern, until it's time to depart. |

We travel directly to Tswaing Crater from Johannesburg. Please note, this walk will require good walking shoes and a hat. The walk is approx. 7. 5km, and will take 2-3hrs depending on speed walked and length of stops.
We will visit the interpretation centre on our return to the car park, after which we will have a picnic lunch. All food and soft drinks will be provided.
If it is raining enough to prevent doing this walk, we can visit the Voortrekker Monument instead, and then proceed to the city.
From the crater we drive to the city, travelling down Church Street past Paul Kruger's house to Church Square. We alight and walk around before proceeding to the Union Buidings. Here, we can walk in the gardens and view the memorials.
We then proceed back to Johannedburg, passing Melrose House and City Hall before leaving the city and returning to Johannesburg.
The itinerary is flexible, and can be changed to accommodate any special interest - I aim for the personal touch. |

This tour can take between 8 and 10 hours, depending on the time spent at each location and the traffic.
It is not suitable for rainy days, and can be modified to exclude the crater and include the Voortekker Monument instead.
Please note that in summer it can get quite hot. |
