Turin, of Roman origin and located on the river Po surrounded by rolling hills and Alps, was the first stop on the Eighteenth century Grand Tour. It boasts one of the most harmonious city plans in Europe, and some of the world's greatest Baroque and Rococo architecture and interiors. In the late fifteenth century when Turin was made capital of Savoy, Duke Emanuel Filbert patronised a late Renaissance boom in Mannerist and Francophile construction and the city soon became more than a worthy capital. Turin soon served as an important crossroads between France, Italy and Germany, and it is this factor which makes Piedmont's art and architecture so rich, original and sophisticated. The royal palaces and villas scattered around the region are quite unique in their variety and quality, and it is astonishing that they were all built for such a relatively small state. UNESCO has named the area a World Heritage Site for Humanity. |

| For all those that have made a cult of Michael Caine's famous cliffhanger set in late 1960s Turin, here's a hot tour walking in the steps of the legendary Mini-Morris car chase. This ride will zoom you to the Gran Madre, the Palazzo Vela, the Lingotto complex, and to top it all a climb up to the top of the Lingotto to see the fabolous parabolic track, from which a breathtaking view of the city surrounded by the Alpine arc can be enjoyed. |
