Welcome to Thessaloniki, Saloniki, Salonica, Selanik -- the name has changed several times over the city's 2300-year history. During this shore excursion lasting up to six hours, we can see many of ancient, medieval and modern sites from that long history. We can also walk, talk, eat, shop and just generally enjoy the same things the city's inhabitants do.
We can visit the most popular tourist sites from Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman Turkish and modern times, and explore the less well-known but equally important Jewish and Donmeh history here. There are also some beautiful museums displaying the city's varied history and culture.
But just by moving through the city at your own pace, you will sense something timeless and profound -- the difference between the West and the East. This is an "Oriental" city in the old sense -- it was the bridge between Europe and Asia, between Christianity and Islam.
As your private tour guide, I can adjust the itinerary, duration and activities to meet your needs. |

Starting-time is flexible in order to accommodate your schedule, though the earlier in the day the better during very hot summer weather -- around 40 C/104 F with high humidity! Bring a hat, water and comfortable shoes.
Sites may include the Eptapyrgio fortress, old Turkish quarter, Trigonio tower, Konak, Agios Dimitrios, Rotonda, Arch of Galerius, Agia Sophia, White Tower, Plateia Aristotelos, Jewish museum and others.
Contact me if you would like to make a day-trip to other sites in northern Greece.
My natural pace is somewhat relaxed, as I want you to enjoy yourself and soak in what you see. We can start immediately if a plan has been worked out in advance, or we can review our options in a cafe and then begin.
There is a lot to see in the historical center of Thessaloníki, and most of it is accessible by foot, public bus or taxi. Farther destinations will require taxi, my personal car or car-rental.
I will keep a list of options in case of fatigue, weather, traffic or labor-strike interruptions. |
|
| Meet up location: I will meet you at the cruise ship terminal or the hotel where you are staying. Please send me the details in advance. |
|
| End location: I will drop you off at the cruise ship terminal or the hotel where you are staying. |

| 50 Euros - I would recommend having at least 50 Euros in your pocket when you begin the tour. I will handle transportation costs unless there is a last-minute change of itinerary. Lunch, dinner, coffee, water, etc. would be the main expense. Credit cards are NOT practical for most of the businesses, cafes and restaurants here. Currency exchange is a time-consuming task. |
|
My services as your personal tour-guide, and transportation to and from your ship-terminal or hotel and around the city, whether by foot, public bus, taxi, or my personal car. (Note: My car can hold a maximum of four adult passengers.)
Note that in Greece only government-licensed guides may lead tours inside the major tourist sites. We can visit these places too, but I have to make my comments outside, before we enter the site. This is usually not a problem. |
|
Be prepared to pay for your own shopping, souvenirs, snacks, and restaurant meals.
Whenever possible I will factor public transportation costs (bus, short taxi trips) into the tour price and will pay these myself.
For groups with more than four people, there will be an extra charge for the cost of car or van rental.
Prices are for travelers arriving or staying in Thessaloniki. For those staying in hotels out-of-town (Halkidiki, for example) there will be an extra charge for transportation costs. |

| Tour Type: City, Cultural, Shore Excursion |
|
| Transportation Method: Most of the interesting sites and activities are in the historical city center, and we can get to them on foot, or by public bus or taxi. For things farther away, we can go by taxi or my personal car, a 2004 Citroen C3. This is a clean, air-conditioned small car that seat four adults comfortably (driver + 3). At additional cost we can rent a better car, especially for more distant trips or for more than three guests. |
|
| Activity Level: Moderate |
|
Friendly: Yes. |
| You must enjoy walking short distances and be able to get in and out of a taxi and/or public transit. There are often steps, blocked sidewalks and other obstacles in Thessaloniki, which may make it difficult for those with canes, walkers, wheelchairs or other aids. I will help you, naturally, to the best of my ability. |
|
| Kid Friendly: Yes. This tour is suitable for children as long as they are supervised by a parent. Please notify me in advance if there will be children, how old they are and whether we want to schedule specific activities for them. |
