Get impressed by two of the masterpieces that have marked the cultural history of Central Mexico: the Toltec ruins of Tula with its famous Atlantes (columns in the form of warriors), and the most impressive monastery built by the Jesuit congregation, in the eighteenth century.
The Toltec inherited the rich culture of Teotihuacan, after the city of the giant pyramids fell into decay. The impressive urban design and palaces are proof of their high degree of civilization, which would form the base for the later Aztec culture.
The Jesuits, focusing on education and management of haciendas, were a wealthy congregation that built here a church totally covered with gold and baroque paintings on the inside, and fine carvings in the facade. The convent houses a collection of colonial and religious art (Museo de Arte Virreinal), with outstanding paintings of young girls entering monastic live as nuns, one of the few original artistic contributions of Mexico to the world: arte plumario (feather art). And much more! |
