The largest fresh-water reservoir in the center of the island at an altitude of 750 meters. The lake is shaped like the sun in the East and a crescent moon in the West joined together. The indigenous Thao people, still living in the mountain lake area, call it Lalu.
Many visitors come to appreciate Sun Moon Lake's beauty. It is also a popular domestic tour spot, so the weekends are very crowded. On weekdays you can enjoy a peaceful drive along the shore and a boat ride on the lake, or view it from the ropeway to the Formosan Culture Village.
You can make this trip on quite a long day's drive from Taipei. Most visitors thus prefer to stay overnight in lakeside or nearby hotels to appreciate the scenic area.
Taiwan Taoyuan International airport lies near the west coast rail route, so experiencing the Taiwan High Speed Rail bullet train ride may be a convenient end or beginning of your holiday in Taiwan, or shorten your road trip. The Wuri HSR station west of Taichung even offers you airline check in. |

Round trip by road:
We will drive from Taipei, and with freeway rest stops on to Sun Moon Lake. We'll drive along the lake shore, stop at the Wen Wu temple complex and other places of interest.
After lunch, you can enjoy a boat or ropeway ride to Formosan Culture Village park or visit the Ita Thao indigenous village shops.
On the return we may visit Puli in the afternoon. Popular spots are the enormous Chung Tai temple, paper mill, tea factory, winery.
Return by High Speed Rail:
By late afternoon we take the one hour journey from Sun Moon Lake to the southwest of Taichung city and arrive at Wuri district's Taichung HSR station.
From Taichung it is a 37 minute ride at top speeds of 300 km per hour to Taoyuan, where a shuttle bus will take you to the airport. Or a one hour train ride to Taipei in the North, one hour to Kaohsiung in the South. |

THSR tickets: Taichung-Taoyuan NT540, Taichung-Taipei NT700, Taichung-Kaohsiung NT790. Any transfer at your destination from the HSR station to the airport or your hotel, vice versa.
