Easter like Christmas in Prague is an unique experience. This overwhelmingly secular city revokes its ancient traditions. In streets there are open markets. On squares are public performances. You may see on Easter Monday "whipping" of women with willow whips - an ancient custom- dating well to pagan times- to give them the strength of Spring- never violent as sometimes described by misinformed - always more tongue in cheek. And there are ever present painted eggs. Another ancient custom dating back to Tower of Babel where each level was dedicated to a different deity - hence different colors. The tour is like the Prague Stroll but more focused on the folklore. |
