I am a certified and licensed guide and tour management professional, and an independent researcher. I specialize in cultural history tours in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I have lived on and off since coming here in 1986 to pursue graduate studies at UC Berkeley.
Cities -- with all the histories and cultures they host and create -- are my great love. So is the fine art of purposeful and well-informed wandering around in them. A geographer and anthropologist by education, I take the cultural landscape as a text, from which to read history and tell stories about the people and ideas that shaped a place and were in turn shaped by it.
Words and stories are just the beginning. To truly experience the essence (genius) of places(loci) also requires direct, authentic encounters with all the senses. Out on the street, at a leisurely walking pace, we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. And take the time to reflect and to breathe it all in.
I was raised mostly abroad, in a multicultural and multilingual family and community, and have been interpreting places and cultures to myself and others from an early age. I work in English, Spanish, and French.
