Hi, I'm Penelope (but everyone calls me Pen), an Australian living in Berlin since 2005. With a degree in Psychology and Sociology I always had a desire to understand the 'why' behind the things people did. My extensive travels eventually led me to Berlin and as luck would have it, I fell in love with a german and ended up staying! I then developed an admittedly rather fanatical desire to understand why the germans did what they did, during the wars both hot and cold. Where they came from, what they've been through, where they're going. The lovely german is now my husband, and the father of my son. The obsession has now become my work which I love, showing other people around this amazing city, sharing it's stories, the way the city's life has shaped the lives of the people who live here. Berlin has seen war, revolution, dictatorship, devastation, oppression, division, and rebirth. And all of this has been a lived experience by the people who walk these streets. But Berlin's history is not just German history, it's affected us all. Some of the most important events of modern European and indeed global history have played themselves out on the same streets I walk every day. Berlin's unique mix of culture, politics, history and modern development makes Berlin one of the most interesting and vibrant cities you could possibly come across, and I am proud to call it 'home'. Let me show you why!
I offer a wide range of tours, from the must-sees, to more indepth themed tours (see the tours offered). I am a qualified guide at the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial site. I also offer tours which are a bit more off the beaten track - one of my favourites is a neighborhood tour of Kreuzberg, including turkish markets, street art and tales of left wing extremism. Let me know what you're interested in and I'll take you to it here in Berlin! Although most of my tours are conducted on foot or with the aid of public transport, I am also able to provide all of my tours by car or minivan, including transfers from Warnemunde for our cruising visitors. Just ask!
PS. If you're traveling with children, then my experience as a mother here will most certainly help you navigate Berlin's best - from nappy change tables to toddler cafes, kids museums and climbing gyms and legal graffiti walls for teenagers! This is a surprisingly kid-friendly city. . .
