Mercato: the largest open air market in Africa.
Mercato is created due to the segregation policy of the Italian occupier from 1936 - 1941 to keep locals away from the market in piazza the then market designated for foreigners.
All walks of people from Addis Ababa and different regions of Ethiopia visit to buy what they need.
The market goes from Monday to Saturday. It is colorful, vibrant, enormous and unique market. Tourists and transitors passing through Addis Ababa usually go to Mercato and people in the Market are familiar with their picture is being taken. When people accept you to take their picture they usualy smile and properly position themselves and rejection is expressed by covering face or by giving the back of one self. |
