Enjoy a game viewing couple of hours in an urban nature reserve, south east of Pretoria, Gauteng Province, with typical Highveld open grassland, undulating hills and clusters of indigenous trees. This 3800ha reserve can support 2000 head of game and have 272 recorded species of grassland, open water and marshy area bird species. And this is only 38km from O. R. Tambo airport! Proclaimed in 1948 around the Rietvlei Dam with the Sesmyl Spruit, 5 fountains and 5 boreholes providing water for Rietvlei- and Marais Dams. A very unique peat wetland area, which is an ancient lava stream, runs through the reserve, filtering the water. Sightings of game such as Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Rhino, Red Hartebeest, Springbok, and birds such as Common Quail, Blue Crane, Secretary Bird, Northern Black Korhaan, African Finfoot are but a few species to mention. A couple of bird hides in the reserve, makes bird spotting easy and interesting. At the Marais Dam we will stop for a pinic lunch and spotting some water birds! |

Depending on pre-arranged pick-up point, we will drive in either a northern or western direction, towards the village of Irene, situated halfway between Pretoria and O. R. Tambo Airport. At the entrance gate we will have a toilet stop and then proceed driving through the reserve towards Marais Dam for the picnic lunch, observing animals and birds in their natural environment, living and doing like they supposed to do. Please adhere to the rules of the reserve and enjoy maximum rewarding sightings. Don't forget to admire the plants and flowers as well! After the picnic lunch we will proceed towards the gate, taking a different route, where we will have a toilet stop before driving in the direction towards pre-aranged drop-off point.
The picnic lunch will always be customed made for every tour group, depending on dietry requisitions and the season (winter or summer).
