This is a city of contrasts - modern, brash, a melting pot of different cultures and people, and yet very young. From the earliest Iron Age peoples to the financial powerhouse of Africa - this city has seen it all.
Why is this city here? No water, on rocky slopes - an unlikely setting. Growing from farmland to a city of over 120, 000 in 4 short years, weathering wars, foiling a coup, violent strike action resulting in armed insurrection to the final struggles against apartheid - it all happened here.
Trace the softer sides of the city, such as the farmer who left a legacy that lasts to this day, the site of the gold strike that started it all, and see wonderful images of the old Johannesburg at the Ferreiras Mine Museum. Admire the headgear and stamp mill in Hollard Street, and find out a bit about the characters that shaped this city with their eccentricity.

We drive through the suburbs discussing the history of the city, from the forces that formed the land, to the people that moulded it to their needs.
Past a dam built by hand in order to earn a future, the oldest house in Johannesburg, and a city nature reserve with iron age sites to the site of the first gold strike. Into the city to Mary Fitzgerald Square where MuseumAfrica is, Top of the Carlton, Ferreiras Mine Museum and on to Soweto.
We drive to Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela House, Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication and Regina Mundi Church. We see various other landmarks along the way.
Museums available are the Apartheid Museum, Origins Centre, Constitution Hill, Hector Pieterson and Mandela House - you choose. We lunch at Wandies in Soweto, a buffet restaurant serving local foods, simple but good.
