During this tour we will visit the Hermitage Museum. Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, now it is one of the largest and most famous museums in the world with its collections comprising nearly 3 million items. The collections occupy a large complex of six buildings, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors.
We will also visit Sts. Peter and Paul Fortress - the oldest and most historical construction in the city. The Peter and Paul Fortress was built for military purposes, but it was used as a political prison. The Peter and Paul Cathedral had served as a burial-place for Russian Emperors for almost two centuries. The last Russian tsar - Nicholas II and his family were buried in the cathedral's small St. Catherine chapel in 1998. |
