Spend a day exploring a battle once called "The Gettysburg of the West"--the November 30, 1864 Battle of Franklin--and the Civil War experience of Franklin, TN. Our day will start in downtown Franklin as we visit buildings that were used as headquarters, barracks and field hospitals scattered throughout the historic downtown. From there we will head to Fort Granger, a Union fort constructed in 1863. We will then move to Winstead Hill, from which General John Bell Hood, CSA, decided to attack the well-fortified Union troops in the waning hours of the November 30, 1864. We will tour Lotz House and Carter House Civil War museums, and then Carnton Plantation, finishing at the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, the nation's largest private military cemetery. |
