The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and is known as "Canada's poorest postal code". But its also historic, vibrant and diverse.
The downtown eastside is home to Chinatown, one of Vancouver's best neighbourhoods for strolling, exploring, shopping, and--of course--eating. Chinatown Vancouver is one of the largest Chinatowns in the western hemisphere.
Located just east of Downtown Vancouver, Chinatown is one of Vancouver's earliest residential and commercial neighbourhoods, the district became known as Chinatown in the late 1800's, due to an influx of Chinese immigrants before BC was incorporated, thousands of Chinese pioneers and immigrants worked in the province; from 1881 - 1885, 10,000 Chinese labourers were contracted to build the Canadian Pacific Railway.
