On the plateau of Giza one can see the famous Great pyramid of Cheops (2500 B. C. ), the only remaining wonder of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, along with the Pyramids of Chephren and Mycerinus. Down the plateau lies the Great Sphinx!
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo houses the biggest collection of ancient Egyptian monuments (more than 120 000 objects), the famous Royal Mummies Room, and the treasures of King Tutankamun.
The Citadel which houses a number of museums, ancient mosques and other sites is one of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare. Salah ad-Din (Saladin to Westerners 1171-1193 AD) fortified the area to protect it against attacks by the Crusaders. Originally it served as both a fortress and a royal city. Its jewel is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha. (19th century)
