Hi, my name is Peter. Though I am originally from upstate New York, I've lived in Boston on and off for about thirty-five years and I love it. I make it a point myself to get out and see Boston at its best: its plays, concerts, art exhibits, restaurants and attractions, and I'm sure we have much that will interest you when you visit.
I've been giving tours professionally for about three years, and have loved showing off the city to visitors for decades. I am a trained, published historian, a certified visual artist and a former theatre producer and business owner. I enjoy Boston for its historic significance, its quirky traditions, its rough-and-tumble politics, its architecture, museums, sports teams and its people. Boston is the home of the bean and the cod, the Puritans, the Brahmin, the Kennedys, the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics and seventy colleges and universities.
I make an effort to customize your tour to your interests and to provide recommendations for activities you might enjoy even after the tour is done, whether it be a dinner, a show or a harbor cruise. Think of me as your concierge on wheels (and by the way, I accept no commissions or gratuities from the businesses I may recommend).
I love presenting Boston's history from the colonial era to recent times and I try to do so in a way that not too stiff and scholarly, though as a historian I pride myself on my accuracy. If you're interested in the Boston Massacre or Tea Party, I'll show you the sites and tell you the stories. If it's architecture you like, let me show you how some of our buildings both lovely and ugly have shaped our neighborhoods. And if your interests take us beyond the city proper, for instance, to Cambridge or Quincy or beyond, I'll be happy to accommodate as time permits. I can also adjust any of my tours to accommodate up to ten people.
Some visitors find Boston a difficult city to drive in but I'm used to it. I know the shortcuts and backstreets and, like most Boston drivers, I'm safe but aggressive when necessary. I am a professional driver and although my commercial license allows me to drive large busses I prefer smaller, more personalized groups. We can take my car which can comfortably accommodate three guests or I'll rent a larger vehicle. I find a driving tour is the best way to see as much of Boston as possible, but if you'd prefer to do some walking while you're here of course we can do that as well. If you'd like to visit a museum or restaurant or do some shopping during your tour, I'll get you there and wait for you. (Perhaps I can make dinner or theatre reservations for you while I'm waiting).
I can certainly keep you entertained on my own but if you'd like to plan the tour with me that would be great. Shoot me a note and I'll send along a list of possible attractions and their websites for you to look over. Bring your cameras and your kids, and I'll see to it that you leave our city with wonderful memories and mementos and the feeling that you'll want to come back again soon!
