Bastogne, located in the heart of the Ardennes region (southern Belgium), is famous for the part it played in the Battle of the Bulge, Sunday, December 16th, 1944. Everything is quiet and the people of the Ardennes have their minds set on the first Christmas since the liberation of Belgium. Suddenly all hell breaks loose. Hundreds of German artillery weapons with their unseen destructive force try to capture the American positions in the Belgian Ardennes. A total of 250, 000 soldiers, accompanied by 1000 tanks, try to march through the Ardennes. We'll experience this on our visit to the Battle of the Bulge Information Center. Moreover, Bastogne is set in the peaceful Ardennes countryside. The Belgian Ardennes are known for their hills and forests, rivers and streams and meadows and grasslands. The whole area is a gourmet's paradise. When Belgian city dwellers want to get away for a weekend to the country and sample excellent food, they head for the Ardennes. |

Suggested itineraries (your choice)
OPTION 1: The region of Sankt Vith, Bastogne, Celles and Dinant ( The 5th SS Panzer Army of Hasso von Manteuffel) and maybe the Schnee-Eifel. We can extend it towards the Patton Cemetary if time permits (driving distances. We can also combine Bastogne with a visit to the US Cemetary of Neuville-en-Condroz. Be there around 16:45 so that we can attend the ceremony of the coming down of the Stars and Stripes!(very moving)
OPTION 2 : Elsenborn Ridge and Fox Holes (impressive, because were under restauration), the Massacre of Malmédy, combined with a visit to the new beautiful museum at Baugnez, Trois Ponts and La Gleize. We can also combined this with a visit to the US Cemetary of Henri-la Chapelle, the area of the 6th Panzer Army of Sepp Dietrich and Colonel Peiper. In fact it is here that the Germans were clearly defeated. (our favourite tour!) |
