Waitomo Caves are a must do if you are visiting New Zealand. You will be impressed by some of the most beautiful countryside in the North Island. 2 and a half hours from Auckland to Waitomo. See the rolling farmland and travel alongside New Zealand's longest river, the mighty Waikato (flowing water).
We will pass through small villages, see fabulous mountains and scenic reserves, pass by the residence of the Maori King, stop in the famous Kiwiana town and explore the Waitomo area.
Waitomo is remote, beautiful and exciting. There is nothing like it. Visitors have been coming to admire these caves since 1887. |

After meeting you we will travel south on State Highway 1, stopping for morning tea after about 1 hour. A good chance to get up close to the Waikato River and hear about the taniwhas (monsters). A very nice introduction to Maori culture as we pass through Taupiri and Ngaruawahia. We will then turn off and take the 'short cut' through farmland and small villages arriving in Waitomo about 1 and a half hours later.
First take a tour through the original Waitomo Caves, see amazing limestone formations, a 2 million year old fossilised starfish, enjoy a magical boat ride with millions of glowworms over head. Lots of extra options - natural bush walk, see birds, trees and the famous silver fern. Visit historic Waitomo Hotel overlooking Waitomo village. Options include farmshow, barbecue lunch or typical kiwi cafe lunch, visit Te Kuiti (sheep shearing capital) or Otorohanga (Kiwiana captial) and see the Kiwi.
You will arrive back in Auckland feeling that you have had a very special day out. |
